Outtakes from the sessions that produced the Herbie Nichols Trio album (BLP 1519), first released on the Mosaic box set in 1987. This compilation includes all Nichols' compositions that were not released during his lifetime plus four alternate takes from tracks released on BLP 1519.

One of the most neglected geniuses of modern jazz, Herbie Nichols recorded the bulk [of] his discography for Blue Note in 1955 and '56. When we first started to explore the 1500 series for Japanese release in 1983, we discovered many unissued Nichol's [sic] masters. But we could find a title only for "Riff Primitif" thanks to Roswell Rudd. It [was] not until four years later that Alfred Lion discovered his original recording logs and was able to give us titles to [the] rest of his unreleased originals (all of which appear on this second volume), which enabled us to collect all of Nichols' music in a Mosaic set at the time - by Michael Cuscuna
